Democracy Pillar

An analog voting system that makes decisions visible.

Starting point

Democratic decisions are often abstract. They are made through marks, clicks, majorities, or formal procedures. That is not always tangible.

Outcome

The result is a pared-down pillar that collects votes. At its center is a simple tube. The accompanying 3D-printed tokens are then used for the voting process.

Approval, abstention, or rejection are not clicked but dropped in. Color and symbolism are kept clear. This creates a calm voting process that remains immediately understandable.

The tokens are small, simple, and sturdy. They consist of two printed parts – front and back – that are glued together. This two-part design gives them more weight and makes them feel high-quality in everyday use.

Background

The design concept is deliberately simple. A pillar collects the votes; the tokens make the decision visible.

The system forgoes a display, sound, counters, or digital evaluation. This keeps the process slow enough to have a deliberate effect, and simple enough to be understood without explanation.
